When Should Your Child First Visit the Dentist?

Ideally, the best time to start visiting the dentist is when your child’s first baby teeth start to erupt. This first visit is all about familiarization – not actual treatment. It’s OK to bring your child when a sibling or you have an appointment.

Around age two is when the child is able to sit on your lap in the dental chair to have his or her teeth examined. It’s about exposing them gradually, so visiting our office is a straightforward experience that isn’t scary.

Before you know it, your little one will want to sit in the big chair themselves and open wide.

Early Reasons to Visit Our Office

    • Dental emergencies

Hopefully, the first time a child comes to visit is not when he’s had a fall and hurt his teeth. But if your child does injure himself call us immediately at 828-631-3283. We will want to take a look to be sure everything is ok and to provide you peace of mind. If there is a cause for concern we can address it right away!

    • Tooth discolorations

If you notice your toddler’s tooth going black, it could be a sign of early decay. It can happen when foods containing carbohydrates (sugars and starches) are left on the teeth. Such foods include:

    •  milk
    • soda
    • raisins
    • candy
    • cake
    • fruit juices
    • cereals, and bread.

Bacteria that normally live in the mouth change these foods, making acids. Over time, the acids made by the bacteria eat away at the tooth enamel, causing cavities.

Be sure you are brushing your child’s teeth and checking for any signs of decay, especially on the molars which start to erupt around the age of 18 months.

Even if you think your child has no dental issues, come in to familiarize herself with our office and our team. We can keep an eye on her dental development and show her there is absolutely nothing scary about us!
